Lastly, in our fight to decrease the incidence of Tuberculosis cases in the community, the team continued their active case finding with the help of the TB Patrollers, and were able to identify 14 TB presumptive cases. These individuals submitted themselves for DSSM, Nine tested negative for PTB and were prescribed with antibiotics. One individual resulted positive for AFB on DSSM and has started taking anti-TB medication. He is currently on maintenance phase.

To further ensure that the cases of TB in the community won’t increase, TB patrollers continue to conduct their house-to-house health teaching on TB. Additionally, a health information corner and bulletin board was installed at the center of the barangay. This bulletin board will contain posters and other infographics on health issues and methods to for a healthier community lifestyle.

The team will continue its active case finding and health teaching in the community until disengagement. Ultimately, repetitive actions will become a norm and will improve the residents’ health-seeking behaviors.

The team would like to thank the community of Goin, the officials of the LGU of Liloy, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine, everybody who supported them throughout the year 2016. From hospital clerkship to community clerkship, we have received a tremendous amount of love and support for our advocacy.
We have had a very challenging and also fulfilling year. For this, we thank each and every one of you, and we pray and hope for double the blessings to be showered upon everybody who has been part of our journey.
From Team GOINnovate to you: a very Merry belated Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

The recent months have seen a great progress in the health plan on toilet facilities. Several activities have been accomplished in the school and household levels.

As part of promoting the use of sanitary toilet facilities and personal hygiene, a Puppetry presentation was conducted for the elementary school students. This was spearheaded by project leader Dr. Leo Siaotong. Dr. Leo was able to seek the assistance of Mr. Kiko Miranda to train the elementary school teachers on how to perform theater for a young audience.

The elementary school teachers were each given scripts and roles for the play and had practice sessions with Dr. Leo to better prepare for the actual day of presentation.

The puppets were made and enhanced by the team’s gifted artist, Dr Leo, himself.

On the day of the presentation, all elementary students were assessed for their handwashing practices prior to eating. Team members in the guise of sentinel observers, took note of each student’s handwashing practices. After which, the puppetry show was performed. All students watched in excitement.

The puppetry show was a success. 80% of the students were present and were able to learned the importance of proper hygiene.

At the barangay level, the community was finally able to acquire a total of 19 toilet bowls from the LGU through the help of Sanitary Inspector Mr. Ian Obina.

15 Sanitary toilet facilities were constructed in the barangay (15 cements and 5 toilet bowls). In total, 191/199 households have sanitary toilet facilities, with only 8 more households left.

On the last exposure, the team plans to complete the construction of sanitary toilet facilities in the remaining households, and to perform a handwashing demonstration for the elementary school students with evaluation of handwashing practices post-intervention.

Barangay Goin maintains its pride in raising their standards for a cleaner and greener barangay. The community remains, compliant to the importance of practicing proper ecological solid waste management, in the school, home, and barangay levels, as evidenced by a rise in statistics.
The Seminar Workshop on Waste Segregation, Recycling, and Composting has finally covered all the remaining districts. Pamphlets on Household ESWM by DENR-EMB has also been distributed to all households.

Following each seminar workshop, labels of “Malata, Di-Malata, Recyclable” for household trash bins were distributed to each household representative.

In total, barangay Goin has improved its ESWM practices since 2014. Currently, 61% (122/199) households practice proper segregation, 38% (75/199) households practice composting, and 91% (181/199) households practice recycling.

As the CHP nears to a close, the remaining activities that are to be done in the last exposure are assisting in the creation of compost pits in the districts and households, trash recycling livelihood workshop by TESDA, monthly monitoring of ESWM practices, and disengagement.

The incidence of unmanaged hypertension in the community of Goin is declining as several more are diagnosed and given antihypertensive medication. This decline is attributed to the team’s active case finding of hypertensives with the assistance of the hypertensive patrol group which influences the residents to submit themselves regularly for BP monitoring.
Currently, 8 residents are scheduled for check-up with Dr. Digamon to be diagnosed and prescribed with medication.
An additional 2 diagnosed hypertensive individuals have been added in the masterlist. In total, 37 individuals have been diagnosed and have managed hypertension. To promote healthy lifestyle, the team continues their regular dance exercise routine with the residents at the barangay covered court. Volleyball or Basketball games are also done afterwards with the more sports-inclined residents.

Finally, the hypertension patrollers have mobilized and started regularly checking hypertensive residents’ BPs for monitoring, they also constantly remind the residents to adhere to a healthy lifestyle; eat healthily, and perform regular exercises to control blood pressure.

For their last exposure, the team plans to bring the last batch of presumed hypertensive residents at the RHU for check-up, establish a blood pressure monitoring station per district, update the BP monitoring cards of hypertensive residents, finalize the hypertensive masterlist of Barangay Goin.

When water is secured for survival, man can start gathering food for daily consumption. Food ensures that the body is able to take the necessary nutrients it need for proper bodily functioning. This is most essential in growing children between the ages 0-5 years.

The biggest activities in the community health problem of Malnutrition happened in the months of November and December. A seminar on the importance of iodized salt was conducted by project leader Dr. Ruby Tingkahan. The seminar emphasized on the benefits of iodized salt on the human body from the womb and until growing up, and it’s preventive effects for thyroid diseases.

A 7-day activity with mothers and/or primary caregivers was conducted at the barangay health center. The mothers discussed 7 different recipes provided by mothers with well-nourished children. These recipes will serve as the main dishes for the upcoming 8-day feeding program for children aged 6-71 months old at the Day Care Center. Both these activities were conducted in collaboration with Dr. Lourdes De Villa of Barangay Goaw for her research on Feeding Practices.

Apart from the main community garden and individual household backyard vegetable gardens, a second community garden was constructed near the house of the Team for more vegetable availability for the community. The community residents can now harvest at the second community garden for more delicate and healthier vegetables. In total, there are currently 2 large-scale vegetable gardens for the community, and 84% or 167 out of 199 households now have backyard vegetable gardens.

On the most recent Garantisadong Pambata weighing the following data were accumulated:
ü   23% were identified as malnourished children from the ages 0-71 months.
       ü   7% (7/107) children are underweight
       ü   14% (15/107) children are stunted
       ü   1% (1/107) children are severely underweight
       ü   6% (6/107) children are severely stunted.

The team has seen a great big improvement in the nourishment status among the children as compared to the past. These big changes have contributed greatly to the accomplishment of the community health plan.

In the culminating months that will follow, the 120-day feeding program for the malnourished children will continue. A cooking contest to create a 50-pesos budgeted “Value Meal” will also be conducted. These meals will be judged according to 3 criteria: Sakto (Affordability), Sarap (Palatability), and Sustansya (Nutritious). Watch out for these upcoming events!
